What is Aromatherapy Massage?
Aromatherapy Massage is a form of massage that utilises essential oils within the treatment. It is a lighter massage than Swedish Body as it deploys techniques that primarily work on the lymphatic system, which is the system that carries toxins, waste, and other unwanted substances, away from the body. The lymphatic system is in the circulatory and immune systems.
The addition of essential oils into the massage, makes Aromatherapy a very powerful choice of treatment for a wide variety of symptoms and conditions.
What are essential oils?
Essential oils, sometimes known as Aromatherapy oils, are derived from the aromatic compounds of plants, and these oils carry the ‘essence’ of each plant, thus giving them their name.
They have been used for over 6,000 years in various indigenous cultures all over the world to treat, and improve, physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health.
Each essential oil has medicinal properties associated with it, and oils can be blended to create a remedy best suited to each person’s need.
Whilst many aromatherapists use pre-mixed commercial blends, I have been taught to make my own blends, which ensures that you will be given a treatment that is the exact match for your particular needs.
Essential oils have varying potencies which means that it is wise to seek guidance from a trained professional. Whilst most oils are generally safe, there are some with contra-indications, for example, with pregnancy, certain types of health coniditons, and skin complaints.
So, for example, whilst some oils may treat different forms of eczema with great success, other oils might actually irritate it and make it worse.
For this reason it is always very important that you let your therapist know if you have any health conditions and also any allergies.
What will happen in my treatment?
As with all of my treatments, uppon arrival at your first session with me, we will have a chat about your current state of health, and whether you have any particular reasons for coming for the treatment. You will be asked to complete a short questionnaire that ensures that you are fit for a treatment at this time.
If you have any particular health issues, particularly in the physical body, it is important that we are aware, as we may need to modify your treatment in some way, For example, if you have a cut on your skin, we will need to ensure that we massage around that area until it is healed. In rare cases, we may need to rebook your appointment if it is not currently advisable for you to be treated right now.
It is important that you tell me quite specifically what outcome you would like for your treatment. For example, feeling relaxed and uplifted is different to feeling relaxed and sleepy. This is so that I can find and mix the right blend of oils for your treatment.
If you have a specific health challenge that you would like treated, for example, rheumatoid arthritis, anxiety, or menopausal symptoms, again, it is helpful for me to know, so that I can blend the oils accurately.
You will then be asked to remove your clothing down to your underpants, and to lay on the treatment couch, face down, and you will be left in private, whilst you undress.
I will then perform the massage which can take up to 2 hours, all depending on how much of the body I am working on. Light, relaxing music is played during the treatment.
I always ensure that you feel comfortable, warm enough, and that the pressure is alright for you. You are always encouraged to ask questions throughout, or to let me know if anything needs to be changed or made more comfortable.
When the massage is finished I will leave you for a short while to rest, I will being you a glass of water, and we will then have another quick chat to see how you feel and assess when your next treatment will be.
I will pour any remaining oil into a small bottle for you to take home so that you can use it in your bath, or to rub into your skin.
Benefits of Aromatherapy Massage
As with all complementary therapies, we are not able to claim that we can ‘cure’ health issues. However, from experience, Aromatherapy has many great benefits and, after all, most of our Western medicines are derived from plant extracts originally 🙂

The best way to see if it is for you, is to initially call me for a chat and then book yourself in for a treatment, maybe starting with just a back massage, to see if you like it or if it improves how you are feeling.
In relation to my practice, it can be useful for those whom have experienced trauma in various forms, as well as introducing people to appropriate touch in a gentle and safe way.
